Led by its two Co-Chairs Chris O’Shea, the Chief Executive of Centrica and Gary Smith, the General Secretary of the GMB Union, the Future Energy Skills Programme has been created to identify and address the skills, knowledge and capabilities needed within the energy sector for the UK to achieve net zero by 2050.

The UK’s plans for greater energy independence against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty and its transition to a low carbon economy will transform the labour market. It is crucial that we invest in the future skills pipeline and secure a career path for existing workers to manage this transition and create a more sustainable future for everyone.

This Programme will consider how we unlock the skills required in the energy sector by focusing on two key themes. First, how we create careers for the future as the UK accelerates plans for energy independence. Second, how we ensure a fair and inclusive transition for the UK’s existing high carbon workforce as part of our pursuit of net zero.

The Programme will work to deliver two reports - one for each of its key themes. We are aiming to carry out the research for these two reports concurrently and publish them sequentially.

We plan to launch the first report on energy security early in the year while publication of the second report on a just transition will be published later. We will also organise events during the Programme’s work, including meeting with stakeholders and for evidence gathering.
